On the afternoon of December 9, 2019, the dream holiday turned into a deadly nightmare when a group of cruise ship passengers and day trippers became trapped in the middle of a volcanic eruption. Four Corners examines whether more could have been done to prevent the White Island volcano tragedy that left 21 people dead and many others with lifelong traumatic injuries. How much were tourists told about and understood the dangers of visiting New Zealand’s most active volcano? When New Zealand's most active volcano erupted in December 2019, 47 people were trapped in its crater. ‘Their skin just dripped off them like wax’, recounts a first-aider. That week, the government body that monitors the island had warned of an impending eruption, but tour companies in the area offered little information about the dangers. ‘There was no safety briefing about what to do in an eruption ’, says one tourist who made a lucky escape.
