A quick repair on the old Garmin StreetPilot-III and a look inside a circa 2000 GPS.
It seems a small screw that both holds the main processor board in place and also seems to be part of the ground plane connection had worked loose and fallen out. That caused the unit to not power up. Replacing the screw and all works as normal.
This is the first problem I've had with this GPS since purchasing it in 2001, so can't complain about the reliability. It is bulky and heavy, but it does seem to have a fairly decent GPS receiver. I have a selection of external antennas for the unit which seem to help with reception.
I like the simple navigation feature on this unit. In off-road mode, it just gives you a distance and direction to the way point. And it'll keep doing that until you tell it to stop. I'm using this to find a few GeoCaches that are proving hard to find. One is part of a multi-cache where you need to find a location based upon information gathered from previous locations. You can't use the Geocaching App for this as these additional locations are not Geocaches in the system, but you need to find them in order to log the actual Geocache that is in the system.
