Two-way shear or punching shear is a measure of the diagonal tension caused by the effect of the column load on the footing. The compression load from the column tends to spread out into the footing, opposing diagonal tension at a distance d/2 from the face of column on all sides, with the result that a square column tends to punch out part of the footing.
