Made Other Cars Look Like They Were Reversing
The single gear ratio in the Nevera's 1,888bhp powertrain means it can hit big speeds when pointed in the wrong direction.
Nevera already holds enough world records (23 at last count) that Mate Rimac could cover the walls of his office twice with these certificates.
Not content with breaking a slew of speed records to move forward, Rimac decided to break one as it moved in the opposite direction, reaching an incredible 171.34 mph (275.74 km/h) at the Automotive Testing Papenburg facility in Germany.
The reverse speed of many modern cars is electronically limited because they can become incredibly unstable, with the slightest nudge from your wrist potentially sending you into the nearest fence. But even cars without a speed limiter cannot go fast in reverse because they are limited by the ratio of the reverse gear. As an EV with a fixed gear ratio for going backwards or forwards, the Nevera can theoretically go at almost the same speed in either direction.
CEO Mate Rimac explains: "During development it occurred to us that the Nevera would probably be the world's fastest car in reverse, but we had a bit of a laugh about it."
“After all, the aerodynamics, cooling and stability were not designed to speed backwards. But then we started talking about how fun it would be to try. Our simulations showed that we could reach speeds well over 241 km/h, but we had little idea how stable this would be; “We were entering uncharted territory.”
DAF cars equipped with CVT transmissions in the 1960s and 1970s could go almost as far in reverse as forward, but passing 113 km/h (70 mph) is slightly different from going up to 274 km/h (170 mph); What Rimac test pilot Goran Drndak had to deal with in this record attempt.
“It definitely took some getting used to when we were on the run. “You look straight back, watching the landscape move away from you faster and faster, feeling your neck being pulled forward, almost the same feeling you normally feel when braking hard,” Drndak said after setting the record.
“You move the steering wheel very smoothly, being careful not to upset the balance, you follow your route and your braking points to the rearview mirror, all the while keeping your eyes on your speed. “Nevera broke another record even though the way the vehicle was designed was almost completely unnatural.”
