(24 Jan 2015) A couple of thousand people in Port-au-Prince held a protest march Friday demanding President Michel Martelly's resignation as Haiti installed a new Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) that will be in charge of holding delayed legislative and municipal elections this year.
The nine-member body was sworn in on Friday at a ceremony led by Prime Minister Evans Paul, who was himself sworn in last week, at the country's National Electoral Council building.
"Today, the country made a step to safeguard democracy. Democracy only works with elections. Elections cannot walk without principle," said Paul during a news conference.
Meanwhile, anti-government demonstrators were continuing to demand that Martelly step down.
Opposition leaders have promised a wave of intensified street protests to try and pressure him from office.
Earlier on Friday, United Nations Security Council members arrived in Port-au-Prince for a three-day visit, aimed in part to urge the Martelly administration to hold as soon as possible the long-delayed elections.
Martelly became president in 2011 and is scheduled to step down next year.
