How do you say 'ع (Ayn)'?
The eighteenth letter of the Arabic alphabet is called 'ʿAyn' (ع). It represents the sound [ʕ], which is a pharyngeal sound that is not found in English. But it shares some features with the sound [ɑ] as in 'palm'. It might help to think of it as a consonant counterpart of this vowel, although it is not exactly the case.
