There’s a smaller market here every day, but it’s Koraput’s big Sunday Market that’s worth exploring. Tribespeople and local traders alike buy and sell food produce and handmade goods in the lanes around the bus stand and behind the police station; buying stuff here is a rare opportunity to interact with tribespeople on your own.
Every Sunday one can see various Orissa Adivasi people selling their products (e.g. field crops, vegetables, roots, fruits, handicraft items) on the busy weekly tribal market aka haat . Most Adivasi people at the market belong to the Kondh, Paroja, Mali and Gadaba tribes. Their unique facial tattoos and sometimes rather unconventional accessories (e.g. the number, shape and location of the tribal women’s nose rings and ear rings) denote the particular tribe and sub-tribe to which they belong.
