Can you mess up your mixes with setting your studio speakers up the wrong way?
Yes, you can. I wish I could say that it was the other way around. However, if you set up your studio monitors in the wrong position, it will affect how you hear and perceive your mixes. For example, if you do not set them up high enough, you may not be hearing everything you need from the tweeter. It's very important that the tweeter is at ear level. I've seen some producers have their speakers resting directly on their desk. That's okay if you're very short. If not, you want to make sure you raise the speakers on stands or on books, anything, so that the tweeter matches your ear level.
What studio monitors are best to buy?
There are many studio monitor options to purchase nowadays. I don't even know them all anymore. If budget isn't a concern then I would purchase a high quality set of speakers from a trusted brand. For example, Adam Audio or Amphion. If you go in this direction, you'll be looking at purchasing a set between $2000-$5000 for a complete set. If budget is a concern for you, then you could still purchase from a trusted brand but go with one of their more budget friendly options like the KRK Rokit's which might put you around $400-800. You could also purchase something even cheaper around $100. However, when studios are this cheap, don't expect the mona lisa of sound.
Will cheap monitors sound bad?
Yes, cheap monitors will sound bad in comparison to good monitors. However, when you are a beginner, you will not know the monitors sound bad. That's because you don't have the perspective and experience to know what good or bad speakers sound like. To be honest, it's a journey and you'll be okay if you buy a set of cheap speakers. Stick at it, over time, you'll learn more and you'll train your ears. Then you'll notice you need an upgrade.
Are more expensive studio monitors better for mixing?
Yes, more pricey speakers will get your mix in a better state. There is a lot at play here though, for instance, what's in your mix? Is it a large mix? A band mix? Or is it just a piano instrumental? In general, most mixes you hear on the radio will have been done on an expensive set of speakers. However, there are always an exception. That's why music is amazing.
