Dan Mink, The Rhinestone Roper, takes a Mounted Pack Trip to the Bass Lakes located in the Sawtooth Range of the Rocky Mountains of Idaho. Part 1 of this 3 part series starts with the horses loaded in the trailer and ready to head to the high country and ends as they are within sight of the first Lake. Dan is alone on this trip except for his trick horses Jesse James, a Quarter Horse palomino, and Gypsy Rio, an Arabian/Paint.
This episode entails weighing the pack boxes to ensure a balanced load that is not too heavy and the trip up the trail. Trouble occurs when the horses are tired but, as they approach the summit, the trail gets rough and steep. Dan has to dismount and take the horses up one at a time. Once at the top, the lakes are in sight but their work is not yet done. The packs did not hold and have to be redone. Additionally, while on the ridge, Dan can see the beginning lines of smoke from a forest fire. By the third day out, the sky is full of smoke and it's time to get out. Please join Dan on this beautiful adventure into the High Country.
Horsemen, Backpackers and Hikers will enjoy this tour of The Bass Lakes and trails of the Sawtooth Mountains.
