Taraji P. Henson played Shug Avery in the film in 2023. Elisabeth Wilson originated the role on Broadway in 2005. Jennifer Hudson starred in the Broadway revival in 2015. Jennifer Holliday closed the revival in the role in 2017. Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child starred in the original touring cast and the legendary Heather Headley took over for Hudson.
