Pipe clamps are some of the cheapest, best ways to glue up large projects. Years ago I bought these long f-clamps, but they can’t compare to the gorilla strength that a pipe clamps has. Here are a few tips that I’ve come up with over the years for these powerful wood grippers.
1. One annoyance is that the upper jaw sometimes break free. This makes it a pain to line up your jaws when you’re gluing things up. An easy fix is to use a couple rubberbands.
2. Pipe clamps with steel faces are notorious for sliding during gluing as well as leaving marks behind. Grab some carpet tracker runner in the carpet department and cut off thin strips that are the size of the clamp faces. Use some hot glue, add it to the carpet side and tighten them together.
3. When you buy a set of pipe clamps, stay away from the ones with sliding bars. Clamps with handles are strong enough that you can use a wrench on them without bending the steel.
4. If your lower jaw slides and won’t clamp, pull the keys out and flip them over. They can also be sanded a little to fix the teeth needed for them to lock.
5. And finally, you don’t need a lot of long pipe clamps. These clamps are able to hook onto themselves for those rare times you need them long.
