“Cancel culture” can have many definitions. Still, a letter published in Harper’s Magazine, signed by 153 writers and intellectuals, defined it as “an intolerance of opposing views, a vogue for public shaming and ostracism, and the tendency to dissolve complex policy issues in a blinding moral certainty.” Cancel cultists call “for swift and severe retribution in response to perceived transgressions of speech and thought,” they wrote.
