DESCRIPTION:
In 1852, an Indian mathematician Radhanath Sikdar calculated the height of Mount Everest using trigonometrical formulae. One hundred years later, the first mountaineers climbed Mt.Everest and found the height to be accurate. Radhantah Sikdar was a Human Computer with the Surveyor General of India. He was recruited by the first Surveyor General Col. George Everest. The peak was then known as Himalayan peak XV. At that time Mount Kanchenjunga at 28000 ft was considered the tallest peak. Mr.Sikdar’s discovery showed that Everest was taller than Kanchenjunga. The peak was named after Col Everest and slowly Mr.Sikdar’s name was forgotten.
