An instrument the size of a lunchbox is demonstrating its reliability to perform the tasks of a small tree nearly 100 million miles from Earth on the red and dusty surface of Mars.
The device consistently produces breathable oxygen from the Red Planet's thin atmosphere throughout the day, night, and all four seasons.
The Red Planet's carbon dioxide-rich atmosphere has been successfully converted into oxygen by MOXIE.
On seven test runs, MOXIE was successful in producing oxygen. These were carried out under various atmospheric conditions, including day and night and throughout various Martian seasons. The instrument produced six grammes of oxygen per hour during each experimental run. This is roughly the rate of a typical tree on Earth.
Scientists hope to send a scaled-up MOXIE to Mars before sending humans there, where it will be able to continuously produce oxygen at a rate of several hundred trees. At that level, the system should be able to produce enough oxygen to keep people alive once they arrive as well as fuel a rocket for astronauts returning to Earth.
