Russian border troops brace for more rebel attacks
Russian troops on the Tadjik-Afghan border were on Saturday (29/4)
reinforcing their fortifications in anticipation of more Tadjik Muslim rebel activity in the area. Military sources said there were no serious border clashes in the past two days, but units patrolling the Moskovsky border area had to use artillery fire against rebel snipers. Russian military authorities said rebel forces were regrouping in preparation for a possible breakthrough in the Pamir sector of the border. Russian commanders complained that rebel leaders were causing delays at the inter-Tadjik talks being held in Moscow while reinforcing their bases in Afghanistan. Russia has sent additional border guard units, tanks and combat helicopters to the outposts which have suffered from recent rebel attacks. Several thousand Russian troops are helping Tadjikistan's Moscow-backed government fight militant Islamic rebels based in and supported by neighbouring Afghanistan. The Tadjik government took power in 1992 after defeating in a bloody civil war a coalition of Islamic and democratic forces.
