Following yesterday’s positive and record breaking jobs report, a leading economist expressed doubt whether America is fully back on track and on a steady path towards a lower unemployment rate.
Diane Swonk, chief economist at the accounting firm Grant Thornton, stated: “It’s a gut punch to see these numbers every Thursday with no improvement,”
She continued: “The numbers are going in the wrong direction.”
Upwards of 12 million Americans are still waiting for their much needed unemployment benefits.
A recent report from the Century Foundation looked at data from the first four months of unemployment assistance beginning in April, and the results are shocking to some, but I’m sure most of y’all won’t be surprised.
The report found that just 57% of unemployment claims were paid out by the end of July.
Andrew Stettner, from the Century Foundation explained: “It’s taking them seven weeks on average, instead of three weeks, and those are just among the decided cases. We have to hold states' feet to the fire to make sure they fulfill those rights.”
Another report from the U.S. Census Bureau found that last month, almost 1 in every 4 Americans - nearly 12 million people - that filed an unemployment claim, did not receive their funds.
I’ve read hundreds of comments from y’all expressing frustration with receiving your unemployment funds, and hopefully these alarming numbers can kick Congress into gear on passing extended enhanced unemployment benefits that can get us through the rest of 2020.
Finally, the deadline for states to apply for Donald Trump’s weekly $300 or $400 LWA unemployment benefits has come and gone.
As of right now, there are 19 states that are currently paying these FEMA sponsored unemployment benefits that are set to last for 6 weeks.
That means that if you live in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Idaho, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas and Utah, you should be getting a total of $1,800.
And to y’all in Montana, congrats on getting $2,400 in enhanced unemployment benefits!
Just my home state of Nevada is awaiting a decision, as even D.C. and Guam have been approved for these federal unemployment funds before the Silver State!
While they did submit their application before the September 10th deadline and should be able to fund these unemployment claims in Nevada for 6 weeks, I’d love for FEMA to offer my neighbors across the state some reassurance that LWA unemployment benefits will be coming soon.
And to everyone out there that still has not applied for unemployment benefits in your state, apply for these disaster relief funds.
With state funding running low, these extended, enhanced unemployment benefits won’t be available for long.
To all the gig-workers, self employed, independent contractors or 1099 workers, you are eligible for these benefits through the CARES Act and PUA unemployment funds were designed with you in mind.
Get your state benefits, plus the extra $1,800 or $2,400 unemployment checks from the Feds just by submitting your employment history and explaining that you’ve been out of work due to that thing out there impacting your ability to earn money.
Check with your state’s unemployment and PUA guidelines, tell them the truth, and get the money that you deserve in your bank account within days of approval!
Is your state paying $2,400 stimulus unemployment claims? Let me know in the comments below!
