The Cathedral Of Saints Peter And Paul is a Catholic cathedral located in Providence, Rhode Island. The church is the mother church of the Diocese Of Providence, which was formed in 1844, under the Archdiocese Of Hartford. In the 1870s, the Catholic population of Providence began to grow to up to 200,000 people. The bishop at the time wanted to create a new cathedral for the diocese, but was unable to gain support within the Providence diocese. The current cathedral was completed in 1889, and the church contains four bells, two of which ring the Angelus, and one of the bells strikes every hour.
