The value of organized crime in Africa far exceeds the value of Africa's traditional economy. It is the principal source of illicit financial flows (IFFs) and is one of the biggest roadblocks to development in Africa.
Martin Ewi, Technical Coordinator for the ENACT Project at the Institute for Security Studies in South Africa, outlines how ENACT's regional observatories are composed and how they work, as well as how the Project's Organized Crime Index can be used to detect trends in organized crime, and other ways both these tools can be useful to practitioners of justice, law enforcement, and security, as well as those in civil society and academia.
