Woke up on the last day in my own bed with the sun again streaming through the windows. Dunbar is only a 12 mile bus trip from Haddington so was extremely happy to get back last night to see Katrina after being away. Tempting though it was to just stay with home comforts for the day, the pedant in me forced me back on the X7 express down to the John Muir birthplace in Dunbar to start the final piece of the Long Walk Home. ( I also didn’t want to short change all you lovely sponsors out there.)
Half of the way was a 6 mile retracing of yesterday’s steps along the clifftop walk, golf course and the gorgeous beach walks back to East Linton after which there is the option of the pavement along side the busy A198 (which I have done but wouldn’t recommend for fear of being run over by the multitude of quarry lorries and agricultural vehicles that storm along it) or a beautiful Tyneside walk to get me home. Over a flat white and a slab of millionaires (or is it millionaire’s?) shortbread at the Votadini Cafe I decided on the latter and after pausing a while to watch the buzzards circling high above Hailes Castle 2 miles along the bluebell lined path , I meandered the last 4 miles to Haddington.
While I was away our neighbours Carol snd Andy began hosting a Ukrainian family. My 189 mile (as it turned out) journey was really enjoyable but tough from time to time however, travelling over 1500 miles to an alien country and culture while your loved ones fight for their homes and freedoms? THAT is tough.
Be kind everyone.
