Walpack Township, a former farming community was established in the mid-1800s but many buildings in the township were built in 1600s. Its residents were forced to leave their houses in the 1960s, to make way for to erect a new dam at Tocks Island. Fortunately, thanks to efforts of local activists, the dam was never built, but Walpack Township left deserted and keeps live as a monument to some bitter war.
The abandoned township is still scattered with dozens deserted creepy houses. Part of them is under protection as historical landmarks (for instance, such as Andrew Shable House and Decker Ferry House), part is forgotten and being rotten away. Today, I had a chance to explore one of abandoned houses in Walpack Township. It was sold to Delaware Water Gap in January, 1969 and was once used as a Boy Scouts camp (my guess), but stays empty for last 20 years.
