This was the first St. Patrick’s Day parade in Dublin in 3 years. The previous parade was held in 2019, parades in 2020 and 2021 were canceled.
St. Patrick’s Day parade is an annual parade that has been happening in Ireland since 1903, when St. Patrick’s Day became an official holiday. The first parade in the country was held in 1903 in Waterford and the first state-sponsored St Patrick's Day parade in Dublin took place in 1931.
Celebrations of St. Patrick’s Day as we know them today, were mostly influenced by celebrations of the Irish Diaspora, specifically in North America. Interestingly enough, until the late 20th century, St Paddy’s celebrations were bigger abroad than in Ireland.
Typically celebrations involve parades and festivals and Irish traditional music sessions. It is also customary to wear green clothing and accessories and shamrocks on the day.
Nowadays, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated across the world, with parades taking place in the US (the largest parade worldwide is held annually in Chicago), the UK, Canada and many other countries.
