While the bumblebee bat, also known as Kitti's hog-nosed bat or Craseonycteris thonglongyai, is indeed one of the smallest mammal species, it is not the smallest.
The world's smallest mammal is generally considered to be the Etruscan shrew (Suncus etruscus). This tiny shrew species, found in southern Europe and parts of North Africa, typically weighs between 1.8 to 2.7 grams (0.063 to 0.095 ounces) and measures about 4 centimeters (1.6 inches) in length.
Although the bumblebee bat is larger than the Etruscan shrew, it still holds the title for the world's smallest bat. It weighs around 1.5 to 2 grams (0.053 to 0.071 ounces) and has a wingspan of approximately 15 centimeters (5.9 inches). It is native to Thailand and Myanmar and is known for its distinctive pig-like snout.
So, while the bumblebee bat is incredibly small and fascinating, it is not the world's tiniest mammal.
