French new age folk hero Jose Bove was in Mexico City on Saturday to give his support to the Zapatista struggle as rebels rallied on the outskirts of the city.
The farmer-turned-anti-globalisation activist came to prominence last year, when he went on trial with nine others for trashing a McDonald's restaurant in the French provincial centre of Millau.
Since then, he's become one of the leading figures in the growing movement against global economic liberalisation.
Activists like Bove have seized on the Zapatista movement in support of indigenous Indian rights as a potent symbol of their cause.

"I think this march represents international recognition of the indigenous Indians of Mexico. I hope this march will give them new rights and recognition as being an integral part of the Mexican people."

"I think that the battle for the rights of the Indian is one which is tied up with the liberal economic model which we now see imposed on this planet, and the individual rights of the people. It's a fundamental right which is more important than the market. This movement symbolises the existence of people on this planet who refute the logic of the international community."
