Week 6 at the Blue Note! It’s actually a bit surreal. 60+ musicians, 80 shows, 15 different bands. Chick’s musical mastery has indeed reached the level of mystery! I can tell you, though, it’s not all magic — there’s a lot of hard work going into the Birthday Celebration! It was a bit reassuring to have Gary Burton and the Harlem Quartet on this week’s bill. Gary and Chick have played together for 45 years and when they get together it's like they just played yesterday. They play as one, and unlike any other musical duet in history. These two nights were sublime with Chick’s string arrangements for the Harlem Quartet. Carnegie Hall-level sophistication at the small Blue Note Jazz Club! And joined by a special song from Gayle Moran Corea, singing a self-penned love song for Chick: "Your Eyes Speak to Me." Absolutely beautiful. The weekend brought us the deep and grooving music of Chick’s band from the late '90s: Origin. For those of you not familiar with this music, you are urged to explore the recordings from this band! The compositions are amazing and the execution of this complex music by the players is as big-league as big-league can get. For these 3 nights at the Blue Note, Chick created a band he called Vigigin. Which is a coined word for a combination of his bands Origin and the more recent Vigil. In any case, the writing and playing was otherworldly: Steve Davis on trombone, Steve Wilson and Ravi Coltrane on saxes, Carlitos Del Puerto on bass, Marcus Gilmore on drums. The shows were packed out and the audiences treated to full shows and multiple encores — which is rarely seen in a night club situation where there are two shows a night. It was two FULL burning shows, every night.
