Winemaking has long been associated with romance and passion, useful tools for marketing and selling wine and room for more technically advanced thinking.
Does it erase decades needed getting to know every corner of your vineyard, honing the ability to sense the nuances that when bottled can mean a great wine? In the first of three episodes examining the ambitious Frind Estate Winery, we looked at owner Markus Frind's transition from the virtual world of high-tech to the tangible world of wine. In a world steeped in thousands of years of tradition, we quickly learn the winemaking at Frind is anything but traditional. In episode two, we find out how winemaker Eric Von Krosigk harnesses technology and data to bolster the quality of every wine in the portfolio – regardless of its price.
Despite decades of experience in the Okanagan, it is the first time von Krosigk has had access to such an array of tools, empowered by an inquisitive owner with deep pockets. Yet, he still seems in awe at his ever-expanding toolbox. And that’s likely to continue as Frind continues to work towards building one of the most technologically advanced wineries in North America. Still, as Von Krosigk says, the technology isn’t a magic wand, how the grapes are managed in the vineyard remains paramount and in the end, it's the experience that counts.
Watch the full episode below to learn how von Krosigk and company thoughtfully employ technology and marry it with traditional winemaking techniques.
