More than 1,200 people were rescued in the central Mediterranean Sea over the last few days, as ideal weather conditions for the sea crossing from northern Africa to Europe encouraged migrants to embark on the journey.

Various rescue operations were carried out by international charities, the Italian coast guard and several merchant ships.

Italian vessels have recovered five bodies and rescued 674 people packed on a fishing boat adrift in the Mediterranean off the Libyan coast, the Italian Coast Guard said Sunday, while European charities reported saving more than 500.

Some of the survivors had to be plucked from the sea in the Italian operation Saturday that was carried out 120 miles (190 kilometers) off the coast of Calabria by a Navy mercantile ship, three Coast Guard patrol boats and a financial police boat.

Migrant arrivals in Italy are up by nearly one-quarter from 2021, with 34,013 recorded through Friday.

The totals are below the peak year of 2015, but remain deadly with 1,234 people recorded dead or missing at sea by the U.N. refugee agency this year.
