Protesters are attempting to flee a university campus in a last-ditch effort to escape arrest by police in Hong Kong.
About 200 people are under siege after occupying the Hong Kong Polytechnic University for days.
To keep police from getting in, they erected barricades and set its entrance, two footbridges and a building on fire.
The street battle intensified overnight, with demonstrators catapulting petrol bombs at police who responded by deploying tear gas and a water cannon.
The clashes are part of over five months of pro-democracy protests that have rocked the semi-autonomous territory.
