1. 5 8 MS START A field of one hundred and sixty runners get off the mark in the sixteith running of the Boston Marathon. A standard feature of the outdoor track season, this year the race takes on added importance. The first three Americans to finish gain places on the United States Olympic team. In the early running two Finnish stars hold the lead followed closely by two Americans.

But the twenty-seven-year-old Finn ends up with a strong finishing kick. He wins in world record time of two hours, fourteen minutes and three seconds. In the fastest marathon in history, three others also break the record including second place finisher John Kelley of Boston.
