'Queen of the Skies' joins 50th anniversary celebration at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2019
The newest UPS 747-8 was one of the main attractions at the 50th edition of the nation’s largest annual gathering of aviation enthusiasts, the Experimental Aircraft Association AirVenture Oshkosh 2019.
N616UP arrived to a large and excited crowd and was positioned in Boeing Plaza, the premiere venue for static aircraft displays. More than 10,000 people toured the main cargo bay while the aircraft was on display July 23-25 during the event in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
“We want to give our customers the opportunity to see the latest aviation and shipping technology up close,” said Capt. Houston Mills, Flight District manager. “It’s an exciting and unique chance to display how our airline is safely moving their packages faster and more efficiently.”
Approximately 600,000 people attend this event each year, with nearly 900 exhibitors and 3,000 planes on display. The line to enter the -8 continuously stretched the length of the aircraft. Visitors had a rare chance to enter the aircraft through the open nose cone and walk the length of the main cargo bay while viewing displays about Worldport operations, wing and flight deck design, safety features, sustainability and cargo capability. Many said they were overwhelmed by the size of the interior cargo bay and its capacity of more than 300,000 pounds of packages.
“The size and technology of this is simply amazing,” said Terry McCormick, who traveled from Oklahoma with her husband and two small kids. “After seeing the plane and all the information inside, I understand a little better how quickly UPS is able to get my package across the world overnight.”
Representatives from Aircraft Maintenance, the pilot group, and package and freight engineering were on hand to answer questions about the aircraft and UPS career opportunities.
“An important goal of being here is to educate our customers, not just about our aircraft and global logistics capabilities, but also to showcase the talented and caring UPSers who volunteered to make our presence a memorable experience for all,” said Mills. “We are excited and proud to literally open the doors to our aircraft and our industry and show our confidence in what we do and how we do it.”
