December 4th is Miner's Day, or St. Barbara's Day, celebrated in mining communities throughout Poland. Katowice's Nikiszowiec is a unique mining district and one of the best places to fully appreciate St. Barbara's Day, the celebration of which every year becomes an event involving the entire community.
The traditional celebration of St. Barbara's Day in Nikiszowiec begins early in the morning, when the district's inhabitants are woken up at 6:00 by the miners' brass band. The St. Mary's Eve wake-up call in Nikiszowiec has its roots in the early 20th century. The first concert on December 4 took place in 1911. Since then, the mining orchestra plays a concert every year on St. Patrick's Day. Barbara. The orchestra's march and concert attract crowds of spectators.
It is also the first element of St. Barbara's Day celebrations in Nikiszowiec. At 9:30 a.m. in the church of St. A solemn mass is celebrated in Anna's Church, after which special concerts are held in the nearby square. Celebrations and performances often last until the afternoon.
Barbórka is on the Polish National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This list is one of the forms of cultural heritage protection resulting from the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Protection of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which Poland signed.
