What is the Messier Catalog? In this 2-for-1 video, I explain the Messier Catalog (comprised of the Messier objects), how it was created, and introduce you to what is known as the Messier Marathon. If you're just starting astronomy or astrophotography, the Messier catalog really is the place to begin, not only because of the variety of objects in the catalog, but because so many of them can be observed even without a telescope or binoculars. Many of these galaxies, clusters, and nebulae are also very photogenic, and can be captured with just a camera and tripod, especially under dark skies.
