(26 Jun 1978) The auction of Robert von Hirsch's private art collection ends in London having proved itself to be the Olympics of the art world and raising more than 30 million US dollars for the late German industrialist's estate. His passion had been collecting art and he crammed his Swiss home in Basel with works from mediaeval times to the 20th century. The first painting which Hirsch ever bought, "La Rousse au Caraco Blanc" by Toulouse-Lautrec, went to a London dealer for 230,000 pounds. An oil on canvas by Vincent van Gogh, entitled "La Bergere d'apres Millet" was bought by an annonymous buyer for 210,000 pounds and an early Picasso, "Scene de Rue" was sold to an Italian dealer for 125,000 pounds. The top price was another record, 310,000 pounds for "Nature Morte a la Dormeuse" by Henri Matisse, 1940. The audience in London included actors Alain Delon and Jack Nicholson.
