We are doing some fossil polishing and fossil preparation today. After my fossil walk along the Jurassic Coast, I will show you a bit of work I do preparing fossils. I use a polishing machine to buff up the fossils, I built that lapidary unit myself. Its got various elements built into the machine to avoid danger, like a safety switch. I use protective eyewear when working on machines to prepare fossils and nitrile gloves. I did a two year lapidary course when i finished my 'A' levels. This really helped me to develop my skills for work on lapidary machines, especially diamond saws which can be dangerous. I recently supplied a strip of felt for a lady who wanted to "buff up" the Ilminster ammonites by hand. The fossil polishing group did the grinding work using the silicon carbide papers and water. Then with tin oxide polishing powder in the form of a paste and some "lapidary felt", they did a final polish on the ammonites. With lapidary diamond saws a clamp or vice to hold the stone in place is best and you can use a feed system to get the rock your cutting to go slowly through the motor driven blade. All diamond saw blades need some form of liquid coolant-i use water. Most diamond saws have a sump that the blade runs in, picking up the coolant as it rotates. I recommend wearing safety glasses and sturdy rubber gloves when hammering the right rocks. Remember the cliffs are dangerous and liable to fall suddenly and without warning. Keep away from the dangerous cliffs the best fossils are washed out onto the beaches at low tide, by the sea's actions. Look out for the slippery seaweed on the ledges and rocks.
