About the Event
Beginning on 10 February 2022, five Indian states – Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh (UP) – will head to elections. While Goa, Punjab and Uttarakhand will have single-day voting, the elections will be held in two phases in Manipur and seven phases in UP. The voting will be
over on 7 March 2022, and the results for all five states will be announced on 10 March 2022. While much of the attention will be focused on UP – the largest state in India, which sends 80 members to Indian Parliament and is currently governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) – the other states
will provide crucial pointers to the popularity of the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at around the half-way mark of his second term.
The panel discussion will analyse the particularities and complexities of electoral politics in each of the five states. It will also examine the prospects of the BJP and the main opposition parties and look ahead to the 2024 general election.
