A close friend of mine recently sold one of the largest yachts in the world.
I am so happy for him, especially since this has come within 12 months of him selling another yacht of a similar size.
This friend is an interesting case study for folk who would like to become yacht brokers. I worked in the same company with him when he first started as a trainee broker, and to be frank I did not think he would make it. His lack of tact and diplomacy made me cringe, he would make loud and inappropriate comments in sales meetings, and he just didn’t
seem to listen to anybody. He became a close friend...but I secretly doubted that he would become successful.
How wrong I was!
Over the years that followed he worked tremendously hard. His resolve and tenacity seemed to be without limit. Year after year he would tirelessly pursue sellers and buyers of yachts, NEVER giving up on a deal, and NEVER accepting defeat. Sometimes I felt exhausted just watching him!
Today he has mastered an entire armoury of new skills, but he still has the same down-to-earth, rough-and-ready personality that he always had, and I love him for it. More to the point, so do his clients. Some of the wealthiest people on earth.
The yacht brokerage industry is full of all kinds of personalities. The smooth talking extroverts and the reserved conservatives, refined and rough, privileged and underprivileged, it’s one of the things I deeply appreciate about this business.
The one thing they all have in common is a sufficient desire to succeed to overcome obstacles, to never stop learning, and to find and keep clients that are compatible with their character type.
