Andy Rourke, bassist for The Smiths, died at the age of 59 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Johnny Marr, Andy's old bandmate, announced the news on social media while paying tribute to the gifted guitarist."It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Andy Rourke after a lengthy illness with pancreatic cancer," the tweet said.
"Those who knew Andy will remember him as a kind and beautiful soul, and music fans will remember him as a supremely gifted musician."
"We ask for privacy during this difficult time."
Andy contributed to The Smiths' famous back catalogue as well as solo material for Morrissey after the band split up.
He was well-known for his melodious bass playing style.
When the musician was seven years old, he acquired his first acoustic guitar. He met Johnny Marr when he was 11 years old, and the two spent their lunch hours at school playing guitars.
When the two decided to start a band, Johnny suggested Andy try playing the bass, which he quickly fell in love with.
Andy dropped out of school at the age of 15 and joined many rock bands before forming The Smiths with frontman Morrissey, drummer Mike Joyce, and Johnny.
He joined the band after its first performance and stayed for the majority of its lifespan.
He was briefly booted out of the band in 1986 due to his heroin addiction, but rejoined just before the release of The Queen Is Dead the following year.
Andy's contribution to the album, according to Johnny, is "something no other bass player could match."He collaborated with Sinead O'Connor, the Pretenders, Aziz Ibrahim (of the Stone Roses), and Killing Joke during his career.
In 2007, he founded Freebass alongside Stone Roses bassist Mani and New Order bassist Peter Hook.
Fans and friends paid tribute to the brilliant guitarist after his death.
Johnny just shared a series of images of himself and Andy on Instagram."Andy and I met as schoolboys in 1975," he told his acquaintance. We were best friends who travelled everywhere together.
"When we were fifteen, I moved into his house with him and his three brothers, and I quickly realised that my mate was one of those rare people who no one doesn't like."He went on to explain their careers, saying he was always present as a "proud mate and cheerleader" at every single one of Andy's bass takes on every Smiths session.
"We maintained our friendship over the years, no matter where we were or what was happening, and it is a source of personal pride as well as sadness that the last time Andy played on stage was with me and my band at Maddison Square Garden in September 2022," Johnny wrote.
"We shared a special moment with my family and his wife and soul mate Francesca." Andy will be remembered by everyone who knew him as a kind and beautiful soul, and by those who love music as a wonderfully gifted musician. Andy, congratulations. We'll miss you, dude.""I'm sorry to hear this. Andy was a beautiful individual who excelled at his instrument. "Rest in peace, Andy," remarked New Order guitarist Phillip Cunningham.
"Very sad news," wrote Tom Chapman of New Order. Andy was a wonderful soul as well as a very great musician, one of the best bass players and musicians to come out of Manchester, and a true inspiration to me and many others. Andy, rest in peace."
