The model replaced the Mercedes-Benz W120/W121 , which were already outdated at that time. The production of the W110 190 car began in April 1961 , and ended in 1968 with the W110 230 model. The name "swimmer" the car received for its shape.
A total of 628,282 cars were produced..The Mercedes-Benz W120/W121 cars were obsolete and were replaced by the new Mercedes-Benz W110 "Fintail" ( German: Kleine Heckflosse ), which means fin. In April 1961, the 190C car appeared. In 1961, 2 engines were available: a gasoline ( carburetor ) 1897 cm 3 with a capacity of 80 hp and a diesel 1988 cm 3 with a capacity of 55 hp. The models were known as the 190Dc and 190C, to take the nomenclature of the two previous models, known as the 190B and 190Db.The brake system consisted of 4 drums, with a hydraulic circuit, and the gearbox was 4-speed. There were springs and hydraulic shock absorbers on both axles .
Since 1962 , an automatic transmission was offered , and in 1963 the computer configuration for the brake system was significantly changed. Dual-circuit hydraulic and mixed type, that is, with discs in the front and drums in the rear.
In 1965 , the W110 family was modernized. The 4-cylinder gasoline engine grew from 1897 to 1988 cm 3 , and thanks to the adoption of 2 carbs, reached a power of 95 hp. At the top of the range was introduced a 6-cylinder in-line carburetor gasoline engine of 2306 cm 3 from the 230 S W111, but weakened to 105 hp (the 230 S had 120). The W110 with a 6-cylinder engine took its place at the top of the range, as if to replace the 220, the W111 family. in 1966 its power increased to 120 hp. Diesel engines remained unchanged. For a surcharge, it was possible to order a rear hydropneumatic suspension. Commercial post-Facelift versions were designated: 200, 230 and 200 D.
Between 1966 and 1967, the W110 appeared in a station wagon body .
The significant stylistic similarity (although its pace and shortened front overhang are low, giving the W110 less than 14.5 cm compared to the W111) with the most prestigious versions with a 6-cylinder engine, contributed to the success of the 190. But this similarity was not to the advantage of the most prestigious models W111 and W112, which resembled the more spartan W110, and therefore they were soon replaced by new models.
In 1968 , the W110 family gave way to a more modern family with a body of W114/W115 . Two series of W110 cars can be distinguished.
