The spring and summer of 1854 were a dismal time in London, England. Throughout the city, outbreaks of cholera were causing thousands of deaths but the physicians knew why: bad air. With the widespread acceptance of germ theory still years away, the “miasma theory” held that cholera was caused by London’s noxious, polluted air. But one physician thought differently. Dr. John Snow was skeptical of the miasma theory. He thought that the cause of cholera was something in the water. With skillful statistical graphing, Dr. John Snow was able to help stop the cholera epidemic and save lives. Meanwhile, brewers in the neighborhood escaped the epidemic with the help of beer and clean water.
