What is immunoglobulin therapy (IVIg)?
Samantha Ormerod, Lymphoma Care Nurse – Queensland; Lymphoma Australia
Samantha provided an overview of what is immunoglobulins and why they are important in protecting our bodies from infection.
Some patients with certain types of lymphoma or after receiving a lot of immunosuppressive chemotherapy, including stem cell transplants are left with very weakened immune systems. Their bodies are not able to naturally develop immunoglobulins.
These patients need to receive one or two doses of immunoglobulin therapy to restore levels or they may need to receive immunoglobulin therapy every 1-3 months to ensure that their immune systems are able to fight off infection.
Immunoglobulins are therefore a blood product, made from thousands of donors. There is a is strict criteria to receive immunoglobulin therapy.
