There are more than 4.5 million people on probation and parole in the United States. Many of them are expected to pay court fees, laboratory fees, police transportation fees, and other financial obligations after they leave prison. Those who are unable to pay may be sent back to jail. Nathan Link, assistant professor of criminal justice, examines how fines and fees can become a barrier to reentering society after incarceration.
