Gustav Klimt was one of the most well-known painter of his time and a representative of the Art Nouveau style (Jugendstil) in Vienna. Around 1900, together with the likes of architect Otto Wagner, painter Egon Schiele and artist Koloman Moser, Gustav Klimt initiated a synthesis of the arts called „Gesamtkunstwerk“, that would shape the face of the city for centuries to come. Join Adia and Viennese Modernism expert Alfred Weidinger on a tour to the Belvedere Palace, the Secession, the Otto Wagner Pavillon and Klimt’s famous painting „The Kiss“.

-Belvedere Palace: The Belvedere is not only a magnificent Baroque palace but also houses one of Austria's most valuable art collections – with key works by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka.

-Secession: In 1897, Gustav Klimt and a number of other artists quit the conservative Künstlerhaus and founded a new art association called the Secession. The building of the same name was completed in 1898.

-Gustav Klimt: With a total of 24 works, the Belvedere owns the biggest and most important collection of Klimt paintings in the world. Among them is Klimt's 180 x 180 cm masterpiece "The Kiss", which can be marveled at in the Upper Belvedere, where it is on permanent display.

-Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss”: Here, at Upper Belvedere the most famous painting of the master is on view: "The Kiss," this icon measuring 180 by 180 centimeters, whose ornamental character was enhanced by Klimt with gold and silver.

-Egon Schiele: Egon Schiele’s works gave fin-de-siècle Vienna its very own art scandal. His utterly uninhibited sketches of the human body triggered a public debate about where to draw the boundaries of what should be permitted in art. Ultimately this brought the “misfit student of all schools” late but great recognition.

-Otto Wagner: A city rail station designed by Otto Wagner in the Art Nouveau style, which nowadays houses a permanent exhibition on the life and work of the great Austrian architect.

Koloman Moser: His work at Wiener Werkstätte helped modern functional objects and graphics make their breakthrough. Still imitated to this day, his unique illustrative and typographic style continues to inspire contemporary artists.
