In Dragon Warrior III for the NES (also called Dragon Quest III for the Famicom) there's a strange glitch you can exploit to learn several of the main Hero's spells earlier than he is normally allowed.
This glitch can be performed basically at the very beginning of the game. All you need to do is register the maximum number of characters at Luisa's Place so that your character roster is completely filled up. Then, when you open your Status Info, you'll see that your character has suddenly learned numerous spells that are typically not gained until Level 18 or so (I'm assuming you're exploiting this glitch when your Hero is at Level 1).
There are several downsides to this glitch, however. For example, your Hero will no longer be able to use Heal or Return outside of battle, and your Hero will not learn the Bang or Outside spells at all. Sometimes your Items can be affected, as well.
This trick is sometimes called the Companion overload glitch.
