The oil pressure accumulator serves to store oil under pressure when the engine is running in order to use later to pressurize the engine oiling system prior to starting the engine. The majority of engine wear occurs when starting the engine and before oil pressure has built up from the engine driven oil pump. A solenoid valve is used to store oil pressure and then later release the oil under pressure just prior to start up. The engine turns over and starts noticeably faster when the oil pressure is presented to the bearings and valve train prior to start up, this is tangible proof of the benifit. A manual ball valve is also used, mostly in racing applications but for everyday street use an electrical valve is convenient
