Varaha is the third of the 10 avatars of the Hindu god Vishnu. In this form, Vishnu takes the shape of a boar to rescue the earth from the demon Hiranyaksha, who has dragged it to the bottom of the sea. The story goes that Vishnu and Hiranyaksha fight for a thousand years, and then Varaha kills the demon and uses his tusks to lift the earth out of the water. Varaha is often depicted as a boar, but can also be shown with a boar's head and a human body. His consort, Bhumi, is usually depicted as a goddess being lifted by Varaha.
