Japan’s newly minted Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has called for snap elections scheduled for 31 October. While the ruling coalition is likely to retain their majority in parliament, the real challenge ahead for the new administration will be quelling the undercurrent of unhappiness among citizens and formulating an economic recovery plan for Japan after the country was hit by a deadly fifth wave of COVID-19 infections.
