Today we have a 2018 Tesla Model 3. We're going to be doing a test fit on the Kuat NV 2.0 four bike platform-style rack, which is part number NV22B-NA22B.This four bike platform-style rack, is probably one of the most high quality and most durable four bike platform-style racks you're going to be able to find. It's make out of solid aluminum, except for the shank, which is solid steel of course. It grips your bikes very well. You can see that this bike is really not going anywhere. One of the cool features about this bike rack is that, if for an extended period of time you only have two bikes to take out, but you don't want to drag the extra length onto your vehicle, we can come right here and take off the two bike addition, which just slides in right here. If we come back here, we just take off this end-cap, and this little post, and the bolts are inside, you unscrew those, which are right here, and then you just pull off the addition, and put that end cap back on.Something to keep in mind is that, this bike rack because it's so durable, it does weigh a lot.
It weighs 100 pounds. Now on our Tesla, the tongue rating on our hitch is 200 pounds. You've got to keep in mind that with anything you have on the bike rack, plus the weight of the bike rack itself, it can exceed 200 pounds. The bike itself is already 100, so you can only have 100 pounds worth of bikes on your bike rack. Just something to keep in mind. Now another cool feature, is we can tilt this away.
I'm just going to slide into here, and we're going to pull on this lever. Sometimes it helps to lift up on the back first, and then pull it, and then just let it tilt away. However, because the Tesla sits so low, it just sits right on that post. If you do have a full load, you might want to use caution when tilting it down. But we can come and open up the trunk of Tesla, and we got plenty of place to slide in, without the bike impeding on us, and get whatever we need.To tilt it back up, you've just got to reverse the process.
We're just going to grab a hold of the back and pull it up, until it locks into place. The bike has two different points where it's secured. We have a ratchet strap on the back right here, securing the back tire onto the platform. Then upfront, we're going to have this wheel hook, putting down a little force on top of our front wheel, forcing it into the cradle. Now let's slide over here to an empty cradle real quick. We're going to see that it can accommodate a wide variety of tire sizes. We have our road bike tires with that little slot right there, we have mountain bike tires right here, then we can even do fat bike tires, up to four and a half inches wide.If you happen to have four fat bike tires, or if you've even got some lighter E-bikes, you can load up to four bikes on here, each of them can weigh up to 60 pounds.
That's a lot of durability, and it can carry a lot of weight. But again, just make sure that your vehicle can handle it, if you use it on anything other than your Tesla.Let's go ahead and remove the bike. There's a little tab right here, we're going to remove that strap first, because it's the easier part. Now when we come to the hook, you want to make sure you have a grip on your bike. Once we push on this button, and release the hook, and lift it up, we're just going to push it down like that, and then remove the bike. Then when you're done, it's always a good idea to compact a bit. Fold that arm down, push all the way in. And then we want to make sure this strap doesn't flap around too much if we're traveling with it off, so we'll go ahead and fold that in.Now we'll make a couple measurements. First we're going to go from the bumper of our Tesla to the outermost point of our bike rack. We've added on about four and a half feet to the back of our Tesla, which is a lot of space. Now if we come to our ground clearance, the Tesla does sit significantly lower than a lot of other vehicles. But we do have a nice raise in the shank, so we're going to have about 14 1/2 inches of ground clearance, so just over a foot, which should be enough for if you want to pull up into your driveway, or any slight incline. The closest point of our bike rack to the bumper, it's about seven and a half inches, but that's stationary, so you don't have to worry about it making contact with your nice Tesla. We can fold up this bike rack to secure space, all that roo
