The middle route of China's mega water division project completed its 2020-2021 annual mission on Monday after transferring a total of nine billion cubic meters of water to the country's arid northern provinces, marking a record high since its launch, official data showed.
The route outperformed its annual target by 21 percent and transferred a total of nine billion cubic meters of water to Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and Henan during the 2020-2021 period.
Since its launch in December 2014, the middle route has supplied over 43.1 billion cubic meters of water to destination regions, directly benefiting 79 million people. It has also emerged as the key water source for large and medium-sized cities along the route running through the four province-level regions.
The middle route is the most prominent of the three due to its role in feeding water to the nation's capital. It starts from the Danjiangkou Reservoir and runs across Henan and Hebei before reaching Beijing and Tianjin, a municipality neighboring the country's capital.
The Danjiangkou Reservoir received about 34 billion cubic meters this year, which is about four times more year-on-year, allowing to transfer more water to the north for ecological restoration.
So far, the route has moved nearly two billion cubic meters of water to rivers in Beijing, Hebei and Henan for ecological compensation, exceeding the annual target by over 1.4 billion cubic meters.
The eastern route of the project began operations in November 2013, transferring water from east China's Jiangsu Province to feed areas including Tianjin and Shandong.
The western route is at the planning stage and yet to be built.

中间路线是三条路线中最突出的，因为它在为国家首都供水方面发挥了作用。它从丹江口水库开始，横贯河南和河北，到达与首都相邻的北京和天津市。
丹江口水库今年来水约340亿立方米，同比增加约4倍，可以向北调水进行生态修复。
截至目前，该线路已向京、冀、豫的河流输送近20亿立方米的水进行生态补偿，超额完成年度目标14亿多立方米。
东线项目于2013年11月开始运营，将中国东部江苏省的水输送至天津、山东等地区。
西线正处于规划阶段，尚未建成。
