The word Kanji comes from the Tamil language and is known as a type of rice porridge or gruel. While the name kanji is well recognized in South India, it has many variations in, both, name and flavor through East Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa, and Europe. It's other most notable names being congee, conjee, and porridge.
Plain Rice kanji is often plated with side dishes but can also be served as a meal on it's own, particularly for people who are ill. The combination of rice and moong dal make this dish a complete protein that's filling and easy on the stomach.
Kanji is sometimes eaten as a substitute for other meals. It is often considered particularly suitable for the sick as a mild, easily digestible food. Likewise, it can be an ideal dish for breaking intermittent fasting or the day-long Ekadashi fast explained by Sadhguru here:
"On certain days, the body does not ask for food. If you fast on those days, many health issues will be handled. For those who do not have the awareness, Ekadashi was fixed for fasting. Ekadashi is the 11th day after the full moon and the new moon." - Sadhguru
