Peshmerga forces liberated nine villages from Islamic State (IS) militants in the northern Iraqi province of Kirkuk.
Backed by air strikes from a U.S-led coalition, the military forces of Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan Region, with AK-47s on their shoulders, made some of their most significant gains in months.
Gunfire was heard as IS tried to defend its ground and improvised bombs planted by IS exploded.
Civilians in the area stood by anxiously as the fighting took place.
According to local hospital reports, 43 IS members were killed and 79 injured, while four Peshmerga fighters also lost their lives.
The successful offensive seems to be a sign of increasing effectiveness of the cooperation between Peshmerga forces and the U.S.-led coalition. More attacks are expected in the upcoming days.
