(16 Mar 2022) In Judaism, the holiday of Purim which begins this year on 16 March, heralds the miracle of the reversal of evil.
The Russian-Ukrainian war gives the holiday a sad poignancy, and so members of the Hungarian Jewish community organized a public rally for peace on Wednesday under the title "Make noise for peace!"
The book of Esther describes the events of around 450 BC when the Jews under Persian rule escaped. To mark the holiday, the Megillah (scroll) containing the Purim story is read in synagogues, and whenever the name of evil is mentioned, great noise is made.
According to Slomo Koves, Chief Rabbi of the EMIH-Hungarian Jewish Federation, Purim is about the miracle of god's ability to reverse any event.
And now the world is worried about the war in Ukraine, so on this Purim, Jews should raise their voice for peace and for end to the suffering of innocent people.
Pinhas Tsinman, a rabbi and performer of Belarusian origin who fled Kyiv, said that he didnt wanted to leave Ukraine, but left for the safety of his family.
Pinhas Tsinman is a Belarusian-born rabbi and popular performer who has studied in the United States and Israel.
For the past six years he has lived with his family in Kyiv. When the war broke out the rabbi fled to Hungary.
The Hungarian Jewish community is also continuously involved in the care of refugees. They welcome people in need regardless of their religious affiliation and can also provide kosher meals.
Last week, representatives of the Hungarian Jews delivered almost two tons of kosher food, meat, bakery and dairy products to Uzhhorod, Ukraine, while other charity was sent to Romania to help the fleeing Jews from Ukraine.
